South African Tourism is launching a complete new way of promoting tourist destination South Africa in The Netherlands. Africa Business Communities spoke with Mies Hofman, Marketing & Communications Manager at South African Tourism.
How is tourism doing in South Africa after last year's World Cup?
'Last year was an interesting year for us. Due to the World Cup, tourism from The Netherlands grew with 8.4% to 124,000 people. Overall tourism to South Africa grew with 15.1%. '
You are launching a revolutionary platform, what is it?
'We are developing a community platform where we connect Dutch travellers to South African people. All Dutch people who are interested in a holiday to South Africa and South Africa in general can visit this platform. They can ask questions, read stories of locals and other travellers and of course interact with local South Africans. For example when someone is interested in a game drive but doesn't know how it works, they can contact a ranger on the platform and ask their questions about the game. The ranger can give them the full story and can interact with the possible client. We want to showcase South Africa and what the locals do, so when they go they get what they expect and have an experience of a lifetime. The visitors of this platform will connect with South Africa and it's people.'
You are recruiting ambassadors for the community platform. What kind of people are you looking for?
'We are looking for all kinds of people from rangers to nightclub owners, from spa personnel to restaurant owners, from wine farmers to adventure junkies. It doesn't matter what field you are in as long as you are willing to interact with Dutch people. We want to showcase the whole of South Africa and we want to get as many 'ambassadors' out of all provinces in South Africa. All people who can share their stories and want to interact with potential clients.'
What exactly do you want the ambassadors to do and what do they get back for it?
'We want the ambassadors to share their stories, tips, video's, photo's and interact with the Dutch people and build up a connection with potential visitors. The ambassadors who work with us on this community platform will get the opportunity to showcase their country and their expertise. When the possible holiday maker will book their trip to South Africa you will be the first one they think about and possibly visit you when they come over. Additionally we will offer the ambassadors commercial opportunities like providing discounts to community members.'
How can potential ambassadors sign up?
'When you are interested in being an ambassador you can send an email to ambassador@southafricantourism.nl and we will get in contact with you as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please let us know on the same email address.'
What is the latest news?
'We are really looking forward to this new community platform and we think it is going to be a great success. We will have several campaigns to push people to the platform throughout the year so we expect lots of traffic to the website. When the Dutch visited the platform hopefully South Africa will be the destination of their choice.'
When you are interested in being an Ambassador, please send an email to ambassador@southafricantourism.nl
